Green Communications for Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as one of the major trends shaping the development of the information and communication technology (ICT). The forecast shows there will be 100 million connections by 2030 and most of them are contributed by IoT devices. The rapid development of IoT will provide us with ubiquitous and comprehensive service, thereby significantly improving the quality of our life.

However, the explosive increase in IoT devices and the generated considerable traffic load have incurred significant energy consumption and carbon footprints. It has been estimated that 2%–10% of global energy consumption and about 2% of worldwide CO2 emissions are caused by the ICT industry. On the other hand, most IoT devices are portable and powered by batteries. The IoT devices are more sensitive to energy deficit, as recharging these devices is inconvenient and sometimes infeasible (e.g., the sensor nodes in hazardous environments). Thus, developing green communications for the ubiquitous IoT in 5G and beyond has become an inevitable trend. Meanwhile, this research field has attracted extensive attention and inspired thorough research in both academia and industry in recent years.

To facilitate the green evolution of IoT, vast open problems remain to be investigated. From the networking point-of-view, how to deploy base stations and mobile devices, design transmission systems, and choose access modes (fixed or random multiple access) are of significance. Furthermore, how to optimize the resource configuration (e.g., power, spectrum, time, codeword) and devise cost-efficient resource management schemes in centralized or distributed manners has a great effect on the energy-efficiency performance of IoT. Moreover, exploiting other techniques such as the energy harvesting and wireless power transfer may prolong the network lifetime significantly.

This workshop aims to bring together the active researchers in this field to share their timely and solid works on the green communication technologies  for IoT. Through this forum, it is expected to provide a comprehensive overview on this topic and inspire more valuable research orientations.

  • Green network design and optimization for IoT;
  • Energy-efficient resource management for IoT;
  • IoT with energy harvesting;
  • Wireless power transfer in IoT;
  • Energy-efficient modulation, coding, and transmission techniques;
  • Low-power IoT components, chips, devices, etc;
  • New multiple access techniques (e.g., NOMA, SCMA, MUSA);
  • Energy efficiency analysis for IoT;
  • Green communication systems assisted by IoT;
  • Energy storage and management techniques for IoT.

Authors of selected best accepted and presented papers will be invited to submit an extended version to: Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) Journal (IF: 3.259)
